Free TV Commends Government for News Bargaining Incentive

By February 10, 2025No Comments

Free TV has welcomed the Government’s commitment to ensuring global tech giants like Meta pay fair value for Australian journalism. The introduction of the News Bargaining Incentive is a vital step in supporting the sustainability of commercial TV broadcasters and other verified news providers, ensuring Australians continue to access trusted local news—especially in times of crisis and global uncertainty.

Free TV Chair, Greg Hywood underscored the importance of a strong, independent news sector, stating that Australians rely on their trusted local news providers during bushfires, floods, and periods of global instability.” He warned that without fair agreements with dominant digital platforms, the future of local journalism – and its critical role in upholding democracy – remains at risk.

The Government’s announcement builds on the success of the News Media Bargaining Code and reinforces the Government’s commitment to the news media industry, particularly after Meta’s decision to stop paying for Australian news content on Facebook earlier this year.

Free TV looks forward to actively participating in the Albanese Government’s consultation process for the scheme’s final design.
