Fishing Australia – WIN

Free TV Australia works with the commercial free-to-air television industry to promote diversity and equality, on and off the screen.

Nat Thaipun MasterChef Australia – Network 10

Free TV members recognise that our viewers want to see programmes that authentically portray their lives, reflecting the diversity of the Australian community.

One important way of meeting those expectations is for Free TV members to ensure their workforces reflect Australian society. That means recruiting from a broad pool of diverse talent and ensuring that the door to a career in TV is open to everyone.

Free TV members each have a range of policies, procedures, processes and safeguards in place to encourage diversity in recruitment and to address issues that might arise within the workplace from time to time to ensure they provide a safe, healthy and supportive workplace for their staff members.

On screen, the Commercial Television Code of Practice contains provisions prohibiting the broadcast of material that is likely to provoke or perpetuate in, or by a reasonable person, intense dislike, serious contempt or severe ridicule against a person or group of people because of age, colour, gender, national or ethnic origin, disability, race, religion or sexual preference.

Free TV also maintains a set of Advisory Notes, which form part of the Code and are designed to help and encourage members of the commercial free-to-air television broadcasting industry to understand and be responsive to a range of matters. Our Advisory Notes deal with matters including the portrayal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, as well as the portrayal of people with a disability, as well as the portrayal of gender and cultural diversity.

Free TV is a proud member of the Screen Diversity and Inclusion Network (SDIN), a network of broadcasters, screen funding agencies, business associations, guilds and industry-aligned education and training organisations who have committed to work together towards a more inclusive and diverse screen industry. The SDIN actively seeks to improve the diversity of the talent that shapes Australian content and the types of stories that are reflected on our screens.
